The Nurse She Never Needed

Her name was Janice Gravely.

But to me, she was always Mrs. Gravely.

She was my friend.

My mom knew her before I did.

They both went to a monthly Christian women's meeting.

Mom told me Mrs. Gravely would sometimes fall asleep during the meetings.

Her health had been getting worse.

By her mid-70s, she was dealing with several health problems.

Her family had even talked about hiring a full-time nurse.

But that was only part of her story.

Years earlier, she and her husband were flying together in a small airplane.

Her husband suffered a heart attack while flying.

Mrs. Gravely had never flown a plane before.

Suddenly she was alone in the air.

No idea how to land it.

Somehow, she survived the crash.

Her husband did not.

Years later, something else happened.

She was still traveling and speaking.

After one event, someone handed her a drink made from young green barley grass.

She noticed she still had energy afterward.

She didn't feel completely worn out.

So she kept drinking it.

Little by little.

Over time, she said she started feeling better.

And the nurse her family had talked about?

She never needed one.

Mrs. Gravely and me

My mom used to order through her.

Sometimes she would ask me to stop by and pick things up.

I remember walking into Mrs. Gravely's house.

Seeing the products sitting there.

Talking with her.

Listening.

Over time, I got curious too.

Eventually, I tried it myself.

It took some getting used to.

But I kept coming back to it.

Over time, I started noticing changes too.

Not overnight.

Little by little.

Mrs. Gravely lived to be 99 years old.

Still active.

Still interested in people.

Still herself.

Not perfect.

Consistent.

Something simple done every day.

That's what I've done ever since.

Janice Gravely was a graduate of UCLA and an international speaker.

She wrote the book "Won't Somebody Help Me!", the story of how she crash-landed a plane after her husband died from a heart attack while at the controls, despite not knowing how to fly.

Her story was featured by Paul Harvey and appeared in Reader's Digest, Guideposts, and other publications.
