Grape seed extract lowers blood pressure. In a new study, 24 patients with metabolic syndrome (a cluster of heart disease risk factors, including high blood pressure, excess abdominal weight and elevated blood sugar) took a 150 or 300 milligram (mg) capsule of grape seed extract or a placebo daily for one month.

Result?
Those who took either dose of the extract experienced an average drop in systolic pressure (top number) of 12 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and 8 mmHg in diastolic pressure (bottom number).

Theory:
Grape seed extract boosts the production of nitric oxide, a heart-protective enzyme.

Product:
Two gel capsules of Proancynol 2000 contains 50 mg of grape seed extract.

The "Mineral Cure" for Cancer

Selenium is a trace mineral that plays an important role in many functions of the body. The amount of selenium in plant foods vary depending on the area of the country (or world) in which they’re grown. Since a deficiency of  selenium can compromise one's health, the use of supplementation makes good preventive sense. Selenium is a necessary nutrient that helps your immune system function more efficiently. It has been shown to stimulate the activity of white blood cells, the key players involved in fighting infections and cancer. It is also a critical component of your body's antioxidant system, which defends against harmful molecules known as free radicals.

Selenium supplements are used therapeutically for conditions such as AIDS, arthritis (rheumatoid and osteoartlnitis), cataracts, depression, cancer prevention, heart attack prevention, hepatitis C and hypothyroidism; it also improves sperm motility.

Preliminary studies have shown that selenium helps reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, including prostate cancer. In one study, it was discovered that men who consumed the most selenium in their diet developed 65% fewer cases of advanced prostate cancer than did men with the lowest levels of selenium intake.

Another eye-opening study conducted at the University of Arizona in Tucson looked at the effect of selenium supplementation on patients with a history of basal or squamous cell skin cancer. The study involved a total of 1,312 patients, with an average age of 63 years. For almost three years, patients were given either 200 micrograms of selenium supplements or a placebo. Researchers found significant reductions in total cancer mortality (29 deaths in the selenium treatment group and 57 deaths in the control group), as well as total cancer incidence (77 cancers in the selenium group and 119 in the control group) Selenium supplementation provided a significant reduction in the incidence of lung, colorectal and prostate cancers.

Selenium vs. Prostate Cancer

His study was published in The journal of Urology, 1000 Corporate Blvd., Linthicum, M.D. 21090. Men with the lowest levels of selenium were four times more likely to develop prostate cancer than those with normal levels, according to a study. Blood levels of this trace element decline with age. Men who are age 60 or older should be including a minimum of 200 mcg of selenium in their daily diet.

Prevent Prostate Cancer Now

When it comes to prostate cancer, doctors have traditionally focused more on treatment than prevention. Depending on the stage of cancer, treatment options include "watchful waiting," surgery or radiation therapy. Unfortunately, thousands of new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year, and more than 29,000 American men die from it.

Now:
Promising preventive strategies are being discovered in exciting new research.
