Dell Computers and Direct Sales

I've seen several write-ups and financial analysis stating that the reason Dell Computers was number one was their marketing method:

Direct Sales.

In describing Dell's quarterly earnings report posted 5.16.02, the New York Times reported,

"Dell is gaining market share during the industry's difficult times…The Dell advantage lies not in technology, since all the largest PC makers rely on Intel’s microprocessors and Microsoft’s Windows operating systems. But Dell has perfected its direct marketing model of selling to companies and consumers over the Internet or telephone, without resellers or retailers…"

Dell's company reported "revenue of more than $8 billion in the quarter."

Clearly, the direct sales marketing method of going directly to customers is the right thing to do.

Look at Dell's results.

The Dell Advantage anyone?
