How This Became Real to Me
I didn’t learn this from a book.
I learned it from someone I knew.
Her name was Janice Gravely.
But to me, she was always Mrs. Gravely.
She was more than my sponsor.
She was my friend.
Janice Gravely
My mom knew her before I did.
She went to a Christian women’s meeting each month.
Mrs. Gravely was there too.
Mom told me something she never forgot.
She would watch Mrs. Gravely fall asleep during the meetings.
At that time, her health was not good.
By her mid-70s, she had several health problems.
Her family was even thinking about getting a full-time nurse.
But that wasn’t the whole story.
Years earlier, she was in a small airplane with her husband.
He was flying the plane.
Suddenly… he slumped over.
He wasn’t conscious.
Mrs. Gravely had never flown a plane before.
And now she was alone in the air.
She brought the plane down herself.
She survived.
Her husband didn’t make it.
That tells you something about who she was.
Then something changed.
She was traveling and speaking, like she had done for years.
One day after a talk, someone handed her something simple…
A drink made from young barley grass.
She drank it between her talks.
Then again later that day.
And for the first time in a long time…
She didn’t feel worn down.
She wasn’t tired.
Something felt different.
So she kept going.
She made a few changes.
Nothing extreme.
Just something she did every day.
Over time, things began to shift.
She started feeling better.
Stronger.
More like herself again.
The nurse her family was considering?
She never needed one.
Mrs. Gravely wasn’t doing this for the money.
She had already lived a full life.
But after what she experienced… she couldn’t keep it to herself.
She told her friends.
Her family.
Anyone who would listen.
That’s how I got to know her.
Mrs. Gravely and me
Mom would place orders through her.
Sometimes she’d ask me to go by her house and pick them up.
I remember walking in…
Seeing the products sitting there.
Talking with her.
Listening.
Little by little, I became more curious.
So I tried it.
And I’ll be honest…
It tasted awful.
Really awful.
But I kept coming around.
Mrs. Gravely would have people over to her house.
She’d invite anyone she knew.
Let them try it for themselves.
No pressure.
Just sharing.
Over time, something shifted for me too.
Not all at once.
But gradually.
Mrs. Gravely lived to be 99 years old.
Still active.
Still engaged.
Still herself.
I still think about her.
And that first conversation we had.
What she shared stayed with me.
It changed how I look at things.
Not perfect.
Just consistent.
Something simple… done every day.
That’s what I’ve done ever since.
Janice Gravely was a graduate of UCLA and an international speaker.
She wrote the book “Won’t Somebody Help Me!”, where she shares the story of how she crash-landed a plane after her husband died at the controls, even though she didn’t know how to fly.
Her story was featured on Paul Harvey and published in Reader’s Digest, Guideposts, and other publications.
